Boudoir Photography has been growing in popularity over the last couple of years. It’s all over Facebook and Instagram. But what is boudoir photography? Here’s what it is and why every single woman needs a boudoir photography experience.

Boudoir

noun bou·doir \ˈbü-ˌdwär, ˈbu̇-, ˌbü-ˈ, ˌbu̇-ˈ\

: a woman’s dressing room, bedroom, or private sitting room

In it’s simplest form, boudoir photography is intimately photographing a woman in a bedroom setting. That’s the most basic definition ever and doesn’t really do justice to what boudoir photography is really all about. Boudoir Photography is SO much more than just photographs.

It’s about bravery, excitement and beauty. It’s about celebrating you.

Boudoir photography helps women of all shapes, sizes, and colors see how beautiful they truly are, inside and out.

Let me share a little about me. In December of 2017, at the age of 22, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. To say it wasn’t a huge change would be a lie, I struggled through pregnancy and had a very hard labor. I didn’t know how much I was struggling until it was too late with postpartum depression. I never knew how much every women struggled and it wasn’t spoken about as much at the time.

I could’ve chosen to let that destroy me, to run my life, to dictate how I feel about myself. But I didn’t. I chose to use my story of overcoming post party depression, heal from the abuse of the pass and create something that allow me to help other women feel beautiful and loved.

I want every single woman to feel beautiful, no matter what. No matter what. If you’ve gained weight, if you’ve lost weight, if you have 3 kids, if you’ve just experienced a breakup or divorce, if you just got married, if you just want to celebrate you, you deserve to feel beautiful no matter who you are and what you’ve been through.

Boudoir photography also doesn’t have to mean lingerie. There are so many options for what to wear and it ranges depending on your style. Boudoir is more about the experience and the journey you go through, than about what you wear. You can feel just as sexy and beautiful in an oversize T-shirt and knee-high wool socks, as you can feel in a corset with heels on!

A great first step is to figure out your style by picking 3 words that you’d like to describe your boudoir experience. For example, if the words fun, playful, and flirty are the first that come to mind, then you can choose pieces of clothing that represent that.

To me, boudoir photography is about empowering women. The power that a photograph has is often overlooked and can change lives. There is nothing as amazing as seeing a woman who has been self conscious their entire lives get a boudoir photo shoot done and turn into the best version of themselves. There aren’t many jobs where you can witness someone changing right in from of your eyes. I have the best job in the world!

I asked one of our clients who has been through my boudoir experience to write about what she went through. Alex came in super nervous and super quiet. As we went through the shoot, she started to open up and I could tell that she was feeling it and things were starting to click. She wrote:

“I knew that if I felt this way about myself, there was no way on earth he wouldn’t be surprised. I decided to get a photo album for my fiancé—20 glorious and glossy pages from the boudoir shoot that I flip through myself every chance I get. I think I look at them more than he does. It’s a daily reminder that my self-image has completely changed after having my boudoir shoot. A new level of confidence and acceptance became a part of my every day life…all thanks to Morgan, Ashlee and Kaitlyn, three people who have the very special talent of finding beauty in everyone.”

I read something the other day that struck me. “Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.”

The media is forcing us to feel bad about ourselves everyday, whether we realize it or not. Our daughters, sisters and mothers are growing up watching us tear each other down. How do we stop this? This is why boudoir photography is so important. Every women needs a boudoir experience because every woman deserves to feel amazing in their own skin, exactly how they are right now.

Boudoir photography is for any shape, size, color, and age. There is no perfect body. YOU are your perfect body.
